Segovia
Just across the mountains from Madrid is the small city of Segovia. It is famous for the tall, two-tiered aqueduct that cuts across the city center, a mortar-less feat of Roman engineering. The walled upper town is a maze of streets and features a Gothic cathedral and several Romanesque churches. The fairy-tale castle (Alcázar) that is perched at the end of the ridge was once a royal palace. The beauty of the castle and cathedral are best captured from several vantage points outside the Old Town.
A few kilometers from Segovia is La Granja (or San Ildefonso). In order to escape the summer heat of Madrid, the Spanish royals used to come to this 18th-century palace and enjoy its beautiful gardens and fountains.
